What Is a Crossover Cable?

There are times when you might need to interconnect two computers for one reason or another; it could be to avoid purchasing a hub which is an alternative or just the need to compete in a multiplayer game with a college. Whatever the reason it might be to achieve an interconnection between the two computers you will need a crossover cable.
A crossover cable, although not being very popular nowadays is a cable that is used to enable direct communication between two independent computers by interconnecting them. Most recent computers come built with a network card which substitutes the need of using the crossover cable. The computers just need to be in the same network which is achieved by the use of a router or a modem. However, there are some people who still use the cables to make this kind of interconnection.
You can buy a readily made crossover cable from a computer store but you can also make one for yourself. Making it is not that difficult and it can be achieved using readily available materials and following a set of procedures in some of the do-it-yourself web pages. A point to note is that unlike in straight through cables where the signal pins are connected as receiver to receiver and vise versa, a crossover cable pins are connected in a way that the receiver signal pins are connected to the pins on the other end that transmit. Primarily, the purpose of this cable is to allowing two devices communicate without having a hub and connecting output of one device to input of another device.
A few things that you should also consider should you choose to make the crossover cable yourself are to ensure that you have cut enough length because once you have cut you cannot join two different pieces together. You should also know that there is a maximum cable length which is 328 feet or 100 meters for connectors, never make the cables very tight between the two devices, avoid having a bent or sharply curved cable because this can damage the interiors and malfunction and avoid forceful pulling of the crossover cable through the walls or ceilings. To know where to buy a crossover cable you can search online for computer stores near your location or through business listings. If you want to make your own, you can find out which materials you require and the procedure to follow online as well.
